Reflecting on the evolution of design over the past few decades, it becomes evident that AI is not replacing designers but should be empowering them to focus on more intricate aspects of their craft if they use it as a tool.
As someone who embarked on a design career two decades ago, the contrast between then and now is striking. In the early days, senior art directors would recount tales of meticulously working with transparencies and physically airbrushing photos. The time-consuming nature of these processes resulted in works of art that were not only visually stunning but also technically intricate.
Luckily when I started actual airbrushing was a thing of the past but software like Photoshop was still early in development. Resizing images for large-format print in software like Photoshop was a time-intensive task. I spent countless hours cloning out imperfections and manually enhancing product shots. Despite the advancements in technology, the manual effort required was substantial.
Contrary to the fear that AI might make design too accessible, it has proven to be a valuable tool that liberates designers from mundane tasks. The latest AI tools in software like Photoshop are transforming the design landscape, allowing designers to focus on more creative and strategic aspects of their work.
Very soon the realm of video editing will be shifted, with the focus on technical proficiency to creative understanding of composition, timing, pace, and light and shade. Mundane and repetitive tasks will be simplified, allowing editors to concentrate on storytelling and the artistic aspects of video production.
The impact of AI is not limited to 2D design; it is significantly revolutionising the 3D CGI realm as well. The days when designers spent hours creating textures for product surfaces will soon be long gone.
As we continue to integrate AI into the design process, we are approaching a pivotal moment. Designers are no longer mere users of technology; they are becoming conductors of the technology. The role of the designer is evolving from mastering tools to orchestrating the harmonious interplay between human creativity and artificial intelligence.
